Today I truly learned what “Be kind to everyone you meet, for everyone is fighting a hard battle”.
Today was rough. Case and point. I made mistakes. You make mistakes to learn. And I learned an important lesson.
How many times did I say something nasty to someone who I didn’t know because I was frustrated. How do I know they aren’t battling cancer, or someone close to them just died, or any number of other awful things. How often do we all look for a scapegoat in the form of the person you get on the phone from your credit card company.
We’ve all done it. We’ve all made someone we don’t know feel awful for no reason other than to make ourselves feel better, and for what? Nine times out of the ten, that person is a phone operator and has no power to fix your problems. Sure, you’re upset about overdraft fees, etc., but is it necessary to be rude to a complete stranger?
I’m going to make it my personal mission to treat everyone I meet with respect. It goes a long way and you never know what difference it might make. In our digital age it is so hard to humanize the person who responds to emails or phone calls but we should all try. Being human is a gift; the ability to empathize and feel all of these complex emotion. Perhaps we’ve lost a bit of ourselves to our PDAs and laptops.
As I go forward, I shall carry these words with me, as a reminder to be kind and gentle, for truly everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
